Wednesday in Holy Week
Focal shelf
Today we remember Jesus’ lament over Jerusalem, which in Matthew’s gospel forms part of his ‘teach-in’ at the Temple in the days before his execution. Jesus’ prayer uses a beautiful (and slightly quirky) metaphor in which he declares his desire to be like a chook! If you have a chook, maybe you can find a feather to place on your focal table. If not, perhaps a stone as a reminder of the city of Jerusalem and it’s vexed place in the narrative.
Meal
At your meal, read this short lament from Matthew’s gospel. Perhaps there are people in your household who have been to Jerusalem and could share about it? Or perhaps you could share the things you don’t know about Jerusalem and want to find out.
Matthew 23 37-39
‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you, desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” ’
Here is a prayer to share at your meal, or another time:
Jesus our Mother, you long to gather us under your wings
as a hen gathers her chicks.
Enfold us with your love, and help us to see truth.
Hold us as we mourn and lament,
nurture us as we celebrate and rejoice,
and draw us ever closer into your life of wholeness and perfect peace. Amen.
Inner Life
Imagine yourself enfolded. Maybe by a mother hen, or maybe just by a blanket or doona. You could even wrap yourself up to help with the sensation. Invite Jesus to surround you with love and safety.
